Belgrade Fortress is situated on the hill, overlooking the confluence of the river Sava into the Danube. It started as a Roman military camp in the early 1st century AD, growing into a simple fortification, and over the time into a true and powerful fortress. Until present day it remained within the boundaries of the old town and city's center.
The Cathedral Church of St. Michael, in Serbian called "Saborna Crkva", was built in 1845, and it is facing the building of the Patriarchate, in the vecinity of Belgrade Fortress and Knez Mihailova street, in the very center of the city.
Church of St. Alexander Nevsky was being built between 1912 and 1929. The construction was interrupted because of the Great War (WWI).
Kneza Miloša street is a large avenue that connects city center with the highway. It goes for about 1.5 kilometers, from the National Assembly to Mostar interchange.
Sometimes a photo really cannot show a true magnitude of a venture, nor its beauty. So, I will not even begin to portray it with words. You have to see it for yourself. I will give you just a couple of facts.
The Serbian-Orthodox Monastery "Vavedenje Presvete Bogorodice" (eng. "Presentation of Holy Virgin Mary") is the only complex of such kind in narrow Belgrade urban area.
St. Mark's Church is located in the center of Belgrade, in Tašmajdan park. It was built on the place of the old St. Mark's Church, which was constructed in 1830's.
It was the year 1594. Serbian lands were under the Ottoman rule for quite some time. They burned St. Sava's relics to break people's spirit and prevent future uprisings.
One of Belgrade's favorite places for having a picnic or small weekend excursion. if you are staying in the city for a longer period of time, be sure to visit it as it is close to the center (approx. 10 minutes by car if there is no too much traffic, or 30 minutes by public transport).
